I’m getting a bit tired of answering recurring questions on scholarships and interviews stuff, so here’s a FAQ for all you people out there. Enjoy.

Note: These questions are from the ones that I received at my, and most of them are from anonymous sources, so I actually have no idea who they are. Oh, and ignore the bad grammars / spelling in the questions, they’re killing me as well :/

Salam dan hi sis,nak tanya macam mana nak susun sijil.Dah wat research kat google tapi tak tahu yang mana betul.Boleh bagi pendapat sis tak?

Wa’alaikumsalam. Tak ada one right way to susun sijil untuk interview. Untuk basic guidelines, boleh ikut kat bawah ni la:

1) Personal information (Resume / CV, copy of transcripts, recommendation letters, personal statements, etc)
2) Academical certificates / transcripts / results (high school, from latest to oldest)
3) Extra co-curricular activities (international level -> national level -> state level -> district level)

b.Line Issue 21: Creating a Personal Brand Online

Assalamualaikum and hi:)

I thought I could share this here on my blog, so it would be of some use for people outside of University of Wisconsin-Madison (though, I doubt it would be much help, but oh well). After the December issue of b.Line, in which my first article, Drowning in a Sea of Choices, was released, we had to write articles for the January issue, which was just released yesterday (Wednesday, January 29th)

And Alhamdulillah, I was given the chance to write again for this issue, but it wasn’t just one article, but two articles. *jumps high in the air* I was so excited that I think my Writing Director was just laughing at me while she read my emails last November. Oh well, I really do enjoy writing, so obviously I would love the chance of writing more articles.

One of my articles is this particular one, Creating a Personal Brand Online. I was allowed to write two full pages for this article, and so I did. It was a fun time writing this, and I’ve enjoyed it tremendously. So here you go, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it for you. 🙂

Right smack in the middle pages! 😀

Before you start reading this article, take out your smartphone, your tablet or your personal computer, and try searching yourself up on Google. What are the first five things that come up on the results page?

Like it or not, Google might be the first place your future employers will be looking you up before they offer you a job. Believe it or not, some admission officers have been searching up applicants on Google before reaching a decision.

Surveys by Kaplan Test Prep noted a steady rise in the percentage of admission officers that perform internet searches on their applicants in the past few years. Last year, 27% of admissions officers had used Google and 26% had visited Facebook, up from 20% and 24%, respectively, in 2011. A research by ExecuNet has also shown that 77% of recruiters admitted to using search engines to find out more information about potential candidates.

If you’re worried about what people might find out about you on the internet, well, worry no more! To prepare yourself for future Google background checks on you, here are a couple of tips that would help you in creating a personal and professional brand for yourself online!

1. Use a professional email and display name.

This means getting rid of the old email that you made when you were ten. No more using tacky emails like ‘’ or ‘’. Instead, create a more professional and mature email address for career and educational uses.

Use your full name, if possible, so it’d be far more recognizable and professional. Avoid using nicknames like ‘Britney Lovez Candiez’ and ‘BigBooty Judy’, because it would leave a bad impression on people.

2. Use social networking sites as leverages.

Who says social networking sites are bad for you? If you use them in the proper ways, they could help you build a strong personal brand online. Use sites like Facebook and LinkedIn to engage in discussions about current issues. Express your opinions and thoughts about topics related to your intended industry. You can also use social networking sites to create more networks, i.e. with the people you meet at corporate events or through a friend. The more people you have in your network, the stronger your personal brand is.

3. Limit the unnecessary updates.

It really does not look good if your future employers find those Instagram pictures of you and your friends drunk at a club or your mad tweets about your previous co-worker who used to sneeze every two minutes. This behavior gives a negative portrayal of your character, so while you can, try to limit the amount of unnecessary posts and pictures you post online. You can save all the party pictures in your personal album, but there is no need to share them with the whole world.

If you’re worrying about your past Facebook statuses or Twitter tweets, don’t fret. As time passes by, your new posts will push your older ones down, and most people would not bother scrolling down your timeline to find out your dark history. But, if you are really paranoid about people finding them, you can always delete the inappropriate posts!

4. Polish your writing skills.

Pliz du nt rite lyk dis. Nothing is worse than bad grammar and bad spelling. Train yourself to use proper grammar while posting anything online, be it a tweet on Twitter or your Facebook status. You can also improve your writing skills by starting a blog. Not only that you can pick up different writing styles while blogging, but you can also expand your network of friends and spark up discussions about current issues.

Who knows, perhaps your future employer may come across your blog and enjoy reading your thoughts? That’s a great deal for you, as you can showcase your communication skills and your critical thinking skills at the same time!

5. Be true to yourself.

Now, for the most cliché tip ever: Be true to who you are. Do not try to be someone you’re not online, it can really hurt you in real life. Do not try to pose as someone else, or copy someone else’s article and post it on your blog/website as your own (that’s plagiarism!). Do not try to talk about issues that are completely outside your range of interest with hopes to attract more attention to yourself. Doing all these things that are completely opposite to who you are will haunt you in the future.

Now that you’ve read all the above tips, it’s time to improve your personal branding online. Remember to always check on your progress and improve it from time to time. Google yourself every few months or so and see how your personal brand is growing. The more unique and professional your personal brand is, the more people will be able to know who you are, and the more you can increase your credibility.

As said by ExecuNet CEO and Founder, Dave Opton, “As the amount of personal information available online grows, first impressions are being formed long before the interview process begins.” What people find about you online is going to be the first thing they know about you, so you would want to make sure that they find out good things about yourself!

/ FAQs – What To Do After SPM?


Somehow, in the midst of Skyping with him and doing my Calculus 3 homework #1, a weird idea popped up in my head. A good idea, nevertheless. Considering how my has been bombarded with a lot of post-SPM questions like scholarships, A-Levels / ADFP / studying abroad stuff, I figured I could compile some of the questions that I received with the answers as well and put them up here on the blog, so future SPM-leavers could refer to it if they want to.

Hai kak nazu 🙂 if dont mind, could you share with us what did you do during your 3months holiday ; i mean, when you were waiting for your spm result – spm leaver- 🙂

I don’t actually have a 3-months break. Straight away after my SPM, (I think a couple of days after Biology ended), I was on a school trip to Korea for a week plus. Got back to Malaysia, had a few days of rest, off to Australia for a family trip. Then got back to Malaysia again, rested for a while, then in January it was off to Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar again for A-Levels (I did my SPM there too as well), so yeah, it wasn’t much of a long break for me.

MARA Program Ijazah Luar Negara 2012


Sorry for this late entry. I wanted to post it yesterday, but I was so tired out and too busy Skyping with Nazran, reading Detective Conan online and talking to a few friends that I pushed this aside.

Okay, I know the PILN interviews for this year (2012) are done (I think), as it started a few days ago. But never mind, just is just for memory’s sake, plus next year’s batch might find it useful as they prepare for their interviews later on. And perhaps it would help some people who are still preparing for interviews, not only for MARA, but any other interviews.

So. On to yesterday’s interview. I kinda woke up late (well, does 8:30am sounds late to you?) ’cause I slept quite late. I was too busy Skyping, editing my blog and talking to WMA to go to sleep. I got ready, printed out my offer slip, showered, ate breakfast, and by 9:30am, I was in the car with Dad, on our way to Bangi.

Reached PKTM Bangi at about 10:20am. Straight away called Uyaq, and met up with the rest of the Eldaterra people. Talked to Famas, Skeen and Uyaq while waiting for our turn to register. Helped them prepare some answers. While we were preparing, Yuyou came and join us. :DD

10:35am. Registration time. Went to the table for Panel 5 and quickly registered myself. Got my number tag – E3. Caught up with Uyaq and Yuyou, wished them luck, hugged Skeen and Famas as their turns were after us. Tried to call Firas to meet him to say good luck, but he already went up to his designated room, so never mind.

I made my way to the place where I should be going and met my groupmates. There were 7 of us, 4 girls and 3 boys. There was Haziq from BJ, Safwan from SEPINTAR, Afiq from MRSM (couldn’t remember which one), Tasha from SMK Datuk Bahama, Nabihah from SMSS and Hanah from Kelantan (yes, all the way from the north) [oh, booyeah, I remembered all their names!]

As we were doing ice-breaking outside, the people from inside came out. That time all of us were like, “OMG OMG we’re up next.” I was trying to calm myself down when someone called my name. “Eh, Syaza?” I looked towards the voice and couldn’t hide my surprise. “Eh, DILAAAAAAA!” Hehehe. My ex-dormmate from SSP :’) Huhu.

One or two minutes after that, we were called into the interview room. There were eight tables set the middle of the room, with three interviewers. We took our respective seats according to our number and said Basmallah.

Here it is. May the odds be ever in your favour.

There were four sheets of pink papers on the table. I shared the paper with Afiq who was sitting on my left. Our case study was about a university facing economic downturn. So, the Board of Directors of the University wants to cut down the costs in these three options :

a) Students – Increase fee structure / No free lab access
b) Professors – Trench all the professors who are at the end of their service / Force those who stay to multitask
c) Management – Trench all contract and part-time workers

For each option, we should discuss / debate to answer the task, which was to justify why these should not be implemented for your group.

Afiq, Nabihah & I decided to do Professors, Safwan & Hanah chose Students, and Haziq & Tasha picked Management. So we discussed in our small groups for about fifteen to twenty minutes before getting together and pitching in our ideas.

After discussing through everything, the interviewer told us to stop and asked one of us to give the conclusion of our discussion. I was about to volunteer myself when they called Tasha to speak, ’cause I think she was one of the quietest among us during the discussion. So she talked through our conclusions, with some of us adding in a little bit of information here and there.

After that, it was time for the Q&A session. Out of the seven of us, only 3 were questioned. There were Haziq, Hanah & Tasha. Haziq’s question was, “Do you think the discussion was a good one? If we give you more time, what would you improve on?” (something along that line) Meanwhile, Hanah got “In your group, who do you think is the leader? Why?” and Tasha’s “How do you think a good leader should be? Do you think a leader should always be the talkative one?

The last question made me feel like laughing, ’cause the interviewer was referring to me. But never mind about that, I’m trying not to think about that. 😛 We finished our interview at about 12, so we took a group picture before going back home. I went back straight to Shah Alam to attend my cousin’s wedding, and arrive just in time as the bride and groom were walking into the hall. But this one will be in another post, insyaAllah.

Okay. So. For those who would be going for the interview next year, or any other interviews at any time of the year, here’ some tips that you might or might not find useful.

  1. Be CONFIDENT. Even if you suck at English, just try your best and have faith in yourself. Just show that you have the confidence to speak in English.
  2. CONTRIBUTE. Give ideas, and TALK. Even though the ideas and suggestions that you have might be small ones, just share them with your groupmates. Every little idea count, and get yourself involved with the discussion. The interviewers want to see how active you are, your contributions to the discussions and everything else.
  3. LEAD, but don’t CONTROL. Yes, there is a difference between leading the discussion and controlling the discussion. Be the one who get everyone involved. If you see someone who’s not talking much, ask them questions. Get their opinions. Try to get everyone involved in the discussion.
  4. Be POLITE. Respect other people’s views and opinions. Accept their perspective on the topic, but if you don’t agree much, don’t just go and say, “No. I think that’s wrong.” Instead, just say “Okay, I agree, but it would be better if….”
  5. Greet the interviewers before and after starting the discussion. Look at them, do eye-contact, and answer their questions with a clear and loud voice.
  6. Be PREPARED. The questions might or might not be relevant to your choice of course, so just be prepared. It can be some random question out of the blue, or it could be the same as the previous interview sessions.
  7. ANSWER the question – Read it properly and answer it. If the question asked you to JUSTIFY THE REASONS WHY THE OPTIONS SHOULD NOT BE IMPLEMENTED, then answer it. You’re supposed to DEFEND yourself (in this case, your group), not discuss ways to reduce the cost or increase the revenue.
