Mentoring

Hello 🙂

What this is about?

I am thinking about trying out a online career mentoring program for Malaysian university students / graduates. This means that I am available to help you in certain capacities – going over your resume/cover letter, practicing your interview skills, figuring out your strengths and weaknesses.

Understandably, as a postgraduate student, my time may be limited, and I wouldn’t be able to open this up to a lot of people at the same time. This is also a free service, as it is also a way for me to try out some of the methods and theories that I’m currently learning in my postgraduate studies. So it’s a win-win situation, you get some free personal advice on career, and I get to put my theory into practice.

However…

This online career mentoring is not about…

Do note that this online career mentoring is not about:

  • Me telling you what jobs you can apply for. That is for you to find out yourself.
  • Me applying for jobs on your behalf. I can help proof-read your application, etc, but that is all.
  • Me writing your resume / cover letter for you. I can help review them and suggest edits for improvements, but that is all.

This mentoring program is for you to get additional help in seeking out your first job after graduating from university. I am here to guide you, help you prepare for an interview, to talk about your skill sets and how you can use them in your application, things like that. But I am not a counselor. I am just someone who is very interested in self-development and personal growth, and love to share her knowledge with other people. So be mindful of the fact that everything I say are from my own experiences.

What do I require from you?

Please note that this will require some commitment from you as well, as it is essentially a way for you to grow and improve yourself. So I’d need to see that you are committed to improve yourself, or else it wouldn’t work.

I have not yet figured out the specifics of it, considering how it would depend on you and your needs. I am estimating probably between one to four 30-minutes Skype sessions per person, expanding over a few weeks or months.

This, of course, depends entirely on your needs. If you only need one session to go over some interview preparation or resume review, it can be a one-off thing. But if you’re still in university and am thinking about what to do after graduating, the sessions can be spread out over a couple of weeks / months.

Make sure that you’ve read some, if not most, of the posts I’ve written on Fresh Grad 101. This helps to ensure that we do not waste time in going over what has already been written here on the blog. This also gives us time to focus more on working on your personal career plan and all.

Does that sounds interesting to you?

Tentative start date: January 2019 onwards.

If you are interested to be a part of this, please fill out this interest form with your information. Once I get your responses, I will try to see if there are things that we can work on together. It may be that I have to say no to you, depending on if there are a lot of people asking for it. I also may say no if I don’t think I can give you enough help depending your exact situation.

But whatever it is, we will communicate via email, and nothing is set in stone until we both agree to it together. So you can still say no, even when I’ve made the offer to help you out.

Looking forward to hearing from you, and until then, stay awesome!
